A surgeon's precision, an investor's patience

Twenty years in vascular surgery taught me how physicians think about risk. Twelve years in multifamily real estate taught me how to put that thinking to work.

For more than twenty years I have practiced vascular surgery, a field where precision and trust are the whole job. As a board-certified surgeon and the owner of Surgical Associates Chartered, a practice serving more than 44,000 patients, I know firsthand the financial pressures physicians face: high income, higher taxes, and almost no time to manage either.

That understanding is what pushed me into real estate. I applied the same analytical rigor I use in the operating room to the question of where a physician's money should go, and kept arriving at the same answer: professionally managed multifamily properties, held for the long term, with a sponsor who has skin in the game.

Training and practice

I graduated in the top 4% of my class from the University of Michigan and completed medical school at Marshall University, followed by general surgery and vascular surgery residencies at Allegheny General Hospital. I later served as an Assistant Professor of Vascular Surgery at George Washington University before building Surgical Associates Chartered into the practice it is today, a growth that included a private-equity transaction.

I established the Dr. Rodeen Rahbar Scholarship at the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine to support incoming medical students from West Virginia.

Real estate

As a Director at The Laager Group I sit on investment review, capital allocation and strategic oversight. Laager is a boutique sponsor: my partner Andrew Tischer leads acquisitions and financing, Hugh Sales leads underwriting and asset-level oversight, and the three of us stay close to every asset and every investor for the life of the deal. I co-invest in the opportunities I present, so my outcome is tied to yours.

My particular focus is what physicians and other busy professionals actually need from a private real estate investment: clear terms, direct access to the people making decisions, honest reporting, and tax efficiency that is real rather than promised.

Why I do this

The goal is simple. I want fellow physicians to be able to practice medicine because they want to, not because they have to. Passive income from durable, well-run assets is the most reliable way I know to get there.
